School of Mathematics and Statistics
Current, and continuing commitments
- (Continuation, current term began Feb 2003)
member, School of Maths and Stats' Computing Committee.
(Ave. My guess is that the committee itself takes very little
time: essentially none in 2006-08. However,
there is a certain amount of self-imposed admin in that I
like to follow what the computing staff are doing, etc..
My guess is that the average is around
5mins per week PLUS 10mins per week overlapping with and
included in next item.)
The Computing Committee minutes used to be at
https://oldsite.maths.uwa.edu.au/computing/committee/
- (Continuation from earlier years, since 1995)
Convener Working Party on Computer Algebra (CA) in Teaching
(Ave. 5mins p. week.) Well the Working Party sort of died
General guidance person for all sorts of CA questions from staff,
postgrads mostly from Maths but also from elsewhere in Engineering.
(Ave. 1/2 hours p. week., counting demos of latest releases of
software to relevant staff.)
Expert assistant to School computing committee, etc. on
CAS-in-teaching, when they need same.
(E.g. at various stages I have organized Mathematica,
Matlab Symbolic Toolbox and
Maple licencing, for the School, though much of this is now through UCS.)
(Ave. 2 hour per week, though this merges into teaching related time.)
Undergrad.
My mathematical software (esp. CAS) assistance roles
for M2en/MATH2200 courses, and a few 3rd and 4th year courses
(e.g. 3M1, 3M2, ENVE3605, 4A5, 4A4)
and the smaller optional-for-students efforts for M1nn,
are suggested at links from my home page.
- ANZIAM WA branch,
for which I'm committee member, and web page coordinator.)
(There is quite a long background to this and similar activity.
In 1998, at Nev Fowkes' request,
and following a Departmental Retreat in which the formation
of "Research Groups" was suggested
(as a mechanism for reducing tension from Sectional arguments),
I helped Nev attempt to set up a
Continuum Mechanics and Industrial Modelling
Research Group.
(All of the roles originally proposed for UWA's CMIM Group are now
undertaken by the broader, all of Perth, ANZIAM organization.)
