Educational Consulting Work

Laos PDR

In 1998 I acted as one of the two mathematics advisors for IDP to assist in the development of the Faculty of Science at the newly established National University of Lao PDR (NUOL), by combining and expanding several existing institutions. I visited the campus from June 1 for 6 weeks, and during this time I worked with Glenn Johnson (the other Mathematics advisor), other subject advisors in Physics Chemistry and Biology (including Bruce Scott, the team leader) and colleagues at NUOL to plan the Science program, and advise on Faculty structure.

Dr Somkiat Phasy Head Department of Mathematics NUOL visited UWA as an AusAID scholar from April 12 to June 7, 99. The primary aim of this visit was to provide him with industrial modelling experience. We completed research on `Polystyrene Models'. This work is to presented at The Fifth Asian Technology Conference in Mathematics to be held in Chiang Mai in Dec 2000.

In January 2000 in conjunction with RMIT (Garry Fitz-Gerald), Curtin University (Lou Caccetta) and UWA Maths I directed a short (1 month) course for 7 Lao PDR Maths staff on Modelling and Optimization. (3 Jan 29 Jan)

Presently there are plans for four of Dr Phasy's staff to undertake M Sc programs in mathematics and computer science at either UWA or Curtin commencing in either 2001 or 2002 .

Indonesia

I have had a long association with the Institut Technologi at Bandung (ITB), commencing with IDP consulting for the Basic Sciences Bridging Program (BSBP)(86-94). This program, supported by the Indonesian Directorate General of Higher Education and the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau, aimed at upgrading the qualifications of Science lecturers throughout Indonesia. I acted as a Guest Lecturer and assisted in the placement of successful Indonesian participants into M Sc and Ph D programs in Australian Universities. A number of these students completed Ph D's at Curtin University and University of Western Australia.

In February 98 I assisted with the first Industrial Mathematics Week held in Indonesia. Five problems from industry were brought to the meeting held at ITB Bandung. A proceedings will be published. For more details of the meeting and the problems examined see The Australian Mathematical Society Gazette, Vol 25, Number 2, June 98.

From June 12-July 12 99, I visited ITB as a consultant for the QUE project whose primary aim is to improve undergraduate education expecially at ITB. In particular I helped develop course work and student projects in industrial mathematics. Additionally I assisted in the preparation for the Industrial Maths Week to be held in June 2000.

From 1st July - 14 July 2000, I visited ITD as a consultant for IMW2000. I was supported in this activity by The International Committee UWA.

I have visited Prince of Songkla University on a number of occasions as a visiting lecturer and research advisor (salt intrusion in Lake Songkla). I have acted as a supervisor for Prassart Meetam.
