Welcome to my home page.
My professional interest is in mathematical modelling; I use mathematics to understand questions arising outside mathematics.
I confine my attention primarily to continuum mechanics problems and in recent years I have worked mainy on problems that have arisen out of an industrial context; for example, I've worked on problems related to the extraction and processing of minerals, food industry, electronic industry and civil engineering problems. You may be reading this because you've been reading a book I've written with John Mahony,
"An Introduction to Mathematical Modelling"
(John Wiley, 1994, ISBN 0-471-94309-6),whose aim is to train students in the art and science of mathematical modelling. This book has been translated into German by Ulrich Mitreuter "Einfuhrung in die Mathematische Modellierung"(Spektrum, 1996, ISBN3-86025-387-5).
I've also been involved in a number of International Development Programs whose aim has been to improve the qualifications and skills of mathematicians and scientists in S.E. Asia.
