I am a mathematician whose main interests are abstract algebra, discrete mathematics and number theory, plus the applications of these topics to real-world problems. My initial training was in pure mathematics and philosophy, and I maintain an interest in the history of mathematics and mathematics education. Although my background lies in the humanities, I am also interested in the biological and social sciences, especially the role played by mathematics in those areas. And I regularly visit Portugal and some Asian countries to lead research on transformation semigroups, to present courses on topics of mutual interest, or to conduct workshops for overseas aid projects.
When there is time, I pursue a range of activities related to art and craft, bushwalking and conservation, aerobics and tennis, meditation and wine appreciation.
